I've found my thrill in Periscope

Y'all. I will be 47 at the end of this year. The one thing that I've learned through being old, being a parent, and a blogger is that sometimes you just have to release your fears, and just try it. I have failed at so many things, but yet, I've also succeeded a lot, too.

Earlier this week, I told you that "I'm done chasing perfect." I can't tell you  how good that has felt. It sounds so silly when I type it out, but I took the pressure off myself and I quit spending countless hours of my precious hours working for free trying to build traffic to this site. For those of who just read blogs, this may all sound odd really odd to you, but there is a really important business side to all of this. Check out my NC Blogger Network colleague Melissa of Blog Clarity to understand the real work that goes into the blogging for professionals.  Melissa is a fabulous resource, but all of the behind the scenes of blogging zapped every bit of my passion and distracted me from what I think I do best: Storytelling and having you get to know me.

I didn't start out in the print world.  I started out in broadcast journalism.  I left TV in 1996 for what I thought were greener pastures in Public Relations and Marketing.  As I've aged and technology advanced, I lost my technical skills in television production so I've steered away from video in my blogs even though being on camera, is probably my first love. Thanks to Melissa who has educated me on the new app, Periscope, I can go back to some elements of TV that I loved very easily, the live shots. I did a few live shots from the TerraVita 2015 festival in Chapel Hill, N.C. yesterday. I interviewed Colin Bedford of the Fearrington House Inn and Teddy Diggs of Il Palio.  Periscope gives the world a glimpse of what is going on live. I still have a lot to learn, but I know I like it.

Here's the fun part. I didn't know what I was doing and the chefs were OK with that. They had never heard of Periscope, but they were intrigued. I also love the idea of being able to communicate with anyone in the world live, answer their questions. and give them an inside glimpse into my travels and hotel stays.

My handle is the same as my twitter handle (Periscope is owned by Twitter) so I am Leigh Powell Hines at @HinesSightBlog and I plan to do a Tuesday night chat at 7 pm EST on Oct. 13 (This is now scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15 due to my being sick ) so if you have any questions about hotels, North Carolina travel, my battling  middle-age, parenting or just life, join me, and I'll take your questions. You can also leave questions here, and I'll work to answer them in our next live chat.

I did a little chat with my kids last night, and I had no viewers, but we had fun anyway. I'm going to try to embed that chat, but then again, I could be over my head with technology so I'll share the link to find it.

Trying Periscope and getting back to my roots of what I enjoy are my small victories this week.

Featured Blogger

Be sure to check out Mom's Small Victories to see the most popular posts from our linkup, but you all know I like to feature at least one blogger here.

Last week at the VendRaleigh conference, I had a pumpkin with cream cheese icing. The icing was so good so when I saw this recipe for Pumpkin Bars with Cream Cheese Icing, I knew I would want to give it a try. My featured blogger this week is Mrs. Smith of Keeping up with Mrs. Smith.
