Join Wendy's 6th Annual Father's Day Frosty Weekend Fundraiser {Giveaway}

We're celebrating Father's Day out of town, but you can bet I will be seeking out a Wendy's on my travels.  I'm proud to help Wendy's spread the word about this special, fundraising weekend for Wendy's Wonderful Kids.  This is the second year I have participated in the campaign, and you can, too.  

Though you may still be searching for that perfect gift for dad, Wendy’s has something that you can all do together to help other families! And it’s yummy, too!

Now through Father’s Day, anyone can help children in foster care find permanent, loving homes. Continuing its Father’s Day Frosty Weekend tradition for the sixth year in a row, Wendy’s is inviting customers to help raise money for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids. This signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is dedicated to finding permanent adoptive families for children in foster care. Here’s what you need to know:



Who: Everyone! And dad, too!

What: Help Wendy’s make a big donation to Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, the signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption that is dedicated to finding permanent adoptive families for children in foster care. They want to beat last year’s $1.4 million donation! Let’s help them get there!

When: Father’s Day Weekend (June 16 – 17)

How: There are three ways to donate:
1. Buy any Frosty product: On Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17, for each Frosty product purchased, participating Wendy’s will donate 50-cents to Wendy’s Wonderful Kids. (includes the original, parfaits, shakes and floats).

2. Use a mobile-friendly website to check in at Wendy’s: Wendy’s will donate 50-cents for every customer that checks in at Wendy’s restaurants during Father's Day Weekend (June 16 and 17 only) using Wendy’s special mobile-friendly website found at www.wendys.com/treatitforward.

3. Re-tweet: Now through Father’s Day, re-tweet one of @Wendys special Twitter posts with the hashtag #TreatItFwd—and Wendy’s will make a 50-cent donation. You can follow @Wendys on Twitter at https://twitter.com/wendys.

Tie Yourself Up with Great Father's Day Getaways and a Really Cool Idea

I think these are the most adorable Father's Day Shirt and Tie cards from Shuford Prints.  It will go great with the tie that you already bought dad, right?


But, I've got a better idea of how to use these cards.  Write a note and include one of these great travel packages that I'm sure dad (and mom, too) will enjoy inside the card.

If your dad is a golf lover then send him to the prestigious and historic Pinehurst Resort in theVillage of Pinehurst, North Carolina.


I have had the opportunity to dine at this wonderful resort, but have not stayed here yet.  It's on my list!  The gorgeous and grand Pinehurst Resort will hold its third annual Father’s Day Weekend event from June 17-19 with a celebration of golf and golf stories, and a round on recently restored Pinehurst No. 2 where guests can attempt to recreate the unforgettable, Father’s Day putt that won Payne Stewart the 1999 U.S. Open. If you can't make this weekend, the Resort has wonderful golf and recreation packages all summer long.  The classic golf package starts at a rate of $171.  The golfing dad will thank you! 



If you have a baseball loving dad like I had, then head to the Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta for the Family Game Day package to cheer on the Atlanta Braves this summer.   This family fun package includes one night of deluxe accommodations, American breakfast in the Atlanta Grill for two adults and for two children, valet parking, and $50 in stadium dollars to spend at the game.  This package starts at a rate of $209 per night.  I've had the pleasure of staying at this hotel, and you'll love it there.  The game will be fun, too.

Do you have an adventure loving dad?  Look no further than the Inn at Biltmore on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.  Your dad will love the Estate's Land Rover package.   Dad can get in the driver's seat and improve his off-road driving skills.  He can test drive a new Land Rover with an experienced instructor and see new areas of the estate with Biltmore's off-road course.   I've not been on this Land Rover Tour, but I've stayed on the estate, and there are 8,000 exquisite acres to explore. What if you have a culinary loving dad?  Send him to the Umstead Resort and Spa in Cary, NC.  This four diamond luxury hotel and member of the Leading Hotels of the World, has a gastronomic getaway with its Culinary Artist Package.  This beautiful hotel is only a few miles from my home, and I have had the pleasure of having afternoon tea there several years ago.  I've not yet stayed at the property, but my good friends did last weekend for a quick getaway. They raved about their experience.  It's made me want to pack up my bags, get a sitter, and head five miles to what they describe as paradise.  This package includes one night accommodations, and a five-course Chef's Tasting menu paired with wines in the hotels's signature four-star restaurant, Herons.  

As for us, we're taking daddy on a road trip to North Carolina's Topsail Beach.  We finally have a DVD player for the car. Hopefully, the three-hour car ride will go a little smoother for dad (mom, too) than our last trip to Beaufort, NC.   You can also bet that we will stop at a Wendy's to treat dad to a Frosty.  This Father's Day weekend (June 18 and 19) 50 cents from each Frosty purchased will be donated to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.   These donations will be used to benefit the cause of Wendy's Wonderful Kids, which is a program that helps foster children in need find great homes.   This is such a great cause.  Before becoming a mom, I worked as Communications Director for the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  There are so many kids in need.  I can't tell you how important it is for our young people to have stability in their lives.   It pleases me to know that the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption are working tirelessly to better a child's life.   Join me in going to Wendy's this weekend and treating your dad to a Frosty.

The Dining Gamble

I’m not going to lie to you.  I love to eat out.  But do I love to eat out with both of my children? Not so much.  I like to compare taking children to a restaurant to playing craps in Vegas.  Sometimes you win.  Sometimes you lose.  Winning is fun, but losing? Well, that is just a big disappointment, and you walk away angry.

We were pretty lucky with my oldest child, but there have been some exceptions.  As crazy as it sounds, the word restaurant was in his vocabulary as young as two.  We thought it was cute at first that he could say such a big word as a toddler.  It wasn’t cute, however, when I would pick him up from his toddler class at preschool and he would yell in the car at the top of his lungs, “RESTAURANT, I want to go a RESTAURANT” all the way home.  He wanted to eat lunch out EVERY DAY.  It was also around this same time that my husband and I stopped taking him to restaurants as much because it was too much like a crap shoot as to what our experience would be like.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for us is when we dined with my good friend, who is also my son’s godfather, in 2008.  We ate at a popular Raleigh Mexican restaurant where crowds would gather early on a weekend night.  We got there as soon as it opened, and people were already waiting.  My son was happy when we waited outside.  We didn’t wait too long, but as soon as we got to the table, our son wouldn’t go in his high chair.   He wanted to be outside.  The inside of this restaurant is dark, and to him it was more fun outside.  This has to go down in the record books as the most miserable eating experience of our lives.  All three of us, who at the time were in our late thirties and were used to many years of peaceful past dining experiences, were at a loss as to what to do with this child.  He would be happy for a little while, then he would embarrass us.  The three of us spent this dining experience taking turns OUTSIDE the restaurant walking my toddler around where there were crowds and lively music.  We asked for our check, and a to-go box in record time.  It was no fiesta for us.

After that experience, my husband and I made some unwritten guidelines for eating out with children.  We certainly went out to eat less with him (a lot less actually -- maybe just twice a month) and instead chose to have nice gourmet dining experiences for the two of us.  We would hire a sitter for those occasions.   But, sometimes, you just want to eat out casually and unexpected, and kids need to be in tow.  We try not to frequent restaurants where entrees for adults are priced over $10. We are not spending a lot of money on our food when half the time, we are cutting up food, handing out toys, picking up crayons, making trips to the potty, and woofing down our entrees at lightning speed because when the child is done eating, the dining experience pretty much goes downhill from that point.  It’s just not enjoyable. 

Once our son reached the age of three, we went out more frequently, but still abided by our budget rules for eating out with children.  Now that my son is five, we could probably relax our eating out rules a little, and open a new, hip dining world to him, but unfortunately for him, he has a little sister.  She’s now 18 months, and the dining crap shoot is just now starting with her.


She has found her inner voice and began shrieking very loudly at a restaurant in Cary on a quick lunch stop.  She thought it was funny.  I did not.  If you can tell, I’m not much of a gambler.
