Saying "I Do" in the Afternoon

All my Children Wedding (Erica and Tom)
Erica Kane married Tom Cudahy in 1978
This was Erica's third trip down the aisle.
All My Children, ABC

When ABC announced last week that it is canceling two long-running soap operas, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," I felt emotion and disbelief.  Honestly,  I haven't watched soap operas in many years. Still, something was comforting knowing that the people of Pine Valley and Llanview were having issues, and their tumultuous lives made your own seem so reasonable and calm even on your worse days.

Soap Operas make me think of my Grandma Powell.   She was a die-hard CBS soap fan, and for three hours a day, she would watch her "stories."  She deserved it.  She was up daily by 4 am, worked in her garden all morning,  shelled peas for lunch then cooked a vast vegetable garden spread that would melt in your mouth.   By the time the "Young and Restless" aired, she was ready to sit awhile.  She turned me on to this little guilty pleasure called a soap opera.  I would never let my child watch a soap opera today, but it was a different time back then.  We didn't even have car seats!

I grew up in the mountains of NC, and our TV reception was so poor that ABC was our clearest channel in the town.  As a result,  my girlfriends and I were all fans of  "All My Children," "One Life to Live," and "General Hospital."  GH was on right after school, and I used a (GASP) VCR to record (yes, that dinosaur)  the shows while we are in school.    In college, I was perhaps even guilty of scheduling a few college courses so that it would not interfere with "All My Children."   After my days at UNC,  I was lucky enough to work for an ABC TV affiliate, so my soaps were on the TV all the time in our studios, editing bays, and newsroom.    Heaven help us if big news struck at 1 pm!  My radio buddy joked that I never scheduled an interview between the hours of 1 pm and 2 pm, and I have to admit he is kind of right when I could do my own scheduling.   If a soap wedding was being held, then he was right on the money!

The Best in Soap Opera Weddings

Soap Opera weddings can rival royal weddings in style, but they can be even more fun because you can expect the unexpected.  A tornado may crash the reception,  the groom's wife who everyone presumed dead will show up at the right time before the wedding couple can say, "I do," or the bride's water may break and she has to be rushed to the hospital just as she walks down the aisle.

A TV era, as we know it, is coming to an end, and since our big royal wedding is right around the corner,   I thought now would be an excellent time to showcase some of our favorite weddings in the daytime.   Hines-Sight Blog Facebook fans helped compile this list as well.    Many of these soap opera couples married, divorced, married others, and remarried each other again, and again.   Soap writers know that weddings get ratings!

All My Children

I have to throw in this tidbit.  I met Peter Bergman, who played Dr. Cliff Warner in 1982 on a trip to NYC with Western Carolina University's Theatre Department.  I was about to die when he walked into that room.   I was 14, and "in love."  He was so lovely, and even talked with me about Erica Kane in the elevator.  He later moved on to the "Young and Restless" to play "Jack Abbott," and I'm sure he was married many times over there as well.

Surprisingly, they were only married once and were later divorced, but Frisco was presumed dead for many years.

They have been married and divorced twice, and in several off/on relationships through the years.
They are still in Genoa City but are in other relationships...at the moment.

They were married once but later divorced.  And yes, that is Meg Ryan!
This was the second-highest-rated soap hour with 20 million viewers.

Bo and Hope on Days of our Lives
Bo and Hope wed in royal style in England in 1985.
The couple has had some rough patches through the years in soapland, but never divorced, but separated many times.  They renewed their vows a couple of years ago.

Anna and Robert on General Hospital
I've always liked the characters of Robert Scorpio and Anna Devane from General Hospital.
Their wedding may not be as popular as others, but it's my blog, and I had to throw them in here.  This was their second wedding in 1991. They were "killed" off in 1992, but have resurfaced many times since their "deaths."
One of their most recent appearances was in 2008 for the wedding of their daughter, Robin.

Patrick and Robin's Wedding on General Hospital
And this is why soap operas will be missed.  Like in our own families, characters grow up, and you are there for important moments in their lives.   Dr. Robin Scorpio, daughter of Anna and Robert, married Dr. Patrick Drake in December 2008.   I had stopped watching General Hospital when this wedding aired, but while doing research for this post, I caught a glimpse, and I have to say, it was moving to see Robert Scorpio walk his daughter down the aisle.  I also want to add that Robin's first wedding to Patrick was halted because her water broke just as she walked down the aisle.   Only in the soaps, right?

There is no question that the Queen of daytime weddings belongs to Erica Kane of All My Children.  She has been married eleven times to eight different men.  A reunion show on Oprah this year reunited Erica with all her husbands.  Some of her husbands have not aged as well as she has, though!!  My favorite "Erica wedding" was to Dimitri Merick in 1993.  It was a grand, royal affair for the residents of Pine Valley.  They divorced, of course, then remarried in 1994.  In soap operas, a lot can happen in one year.

Erica and Dimitri Wedding on All My Children

The most popular soap opera wedding of all time belongs to General Hospital's  Luke Spencer and Laura Webber.  An estimated thirty million viewers watched in 1981when they married in Port Charles.  The two were married the same year as Prince Charles and Lady Diana, and it is reported that the late Princess sent them champagne.  But, you can't believe everything you read on the Internet.  (Actually, it is true.  Anthony  Geary, who plays Luke, confirmed it during talk shows for the 25th anniversary.)

Luke and Laura Wedding was the biggest wedding in Soap Opera History
This was Laura's second marriage when she wed Luke.  She disappeared shortly after the wedding.   The two have had a long-running history with General Hospital, and they remarried on the show for their 25th anniversary.

As we tune in to the real wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton next week, I bet soap opera writers that still have shows on the air may even get some ideas from this grand event for another future daytime wedding.

Update 2020. When this post was written in 2011, my favorite clean beauty brand Beautycounter did not even exist yet. Now, touted as one of the cleanest skincare and cosmetics company that serves the U.S.A and Canada, Beautycounter has launched into Sephora for a four-month partnership to get safer beauty in the hands of everyone.  I love this clean beauty brand and use many products. As a blog affiliate, I invite you to join my VIP Facebook Group for special for my pop-up sales with hostesses.

Spring Break, but Is It Really a Break?

School is out!  I remember when I was in school and couldn't wait to be out of school. I have now learned that unless you pack up and go to the tropics on vacation, spring break really isn't much of a break for parents, is it?  Since pre-school is so much fun, my son would rather be there, and instead of being here bored.  It's also more work for me as I try to entertain him, and I have less time to write.   So, what are we doing?

Well, right now the two are sleeping so I'm doing a catch up post quickly.   When he is awake, my son is watching a lot of TV, and then we go outside and play around the downed trees in our yard.   I will say that it is nice not to rush in the morning.  As I type this, I'm still in my PJs, and could possibly still be in them by 10 a.m.

We bought "Baby Diva" some sunglasses because she would tear up in the sun.  She now wants to wear them all the time.

Only a grandma would give in to these type of demands.  I found the "Baby Diva" eating lunch in her glasses when my mom came to visit.   We are walking around our neighborhood, and posing with downed trees.  My son is pretending to be a newscaster and telling his "viewers" about the storms.  I heard him say, "We'll be right back after these commercials."  That may be a sign that I need to curtail the telly.

As we take this break from school, and my blogging and writing time shrinks to almost none, I wanted to take some time to thank a few bloggers who have given this blog some awards.

I am thrilled to receive the Stylish Blogger award from: Life with Elizabeth and Bob's Your Uncle.   I have enjoyed getting to know both of these bloggers, and look forward to their posts.   Elizabeth just got engaged and is planning a wedding so you know that "I'm all over that one and get so excited when she reveals new details."   MNUKGIRL is an expat living in England.  It's great getting her perspective living in another country.

I also received the One Lovely Blog award from Sundresses and Smiles.   Allie is in college, and I love reliving those wonderful days with her.  I just wished she lived near me then I would add her to my sitter list, and we could chat in person.

When you get these awards, you are to reveal seven random fun things.  Let's see!  I'm not very much fun these days, but I can certainly be random so here it goes.

1. One of my news media friends and I remained close friends through the years.   He's actually my son's godfather.  We talk a lot about our past jobs and that being a member of the news media was a pain in our (let me clean it up) rear end.  The other night after all these storms, he sent me a one line e-mail on Facebook, "Aren't you glad you don't have to work in this mess?"  The answer is YES.   However, I could cheat a little and report from my own backyard.   There are some things I miss about television reporting, but working all hours in tragedy and disaster is not one of them.

2.  I love having a son, but I have to admit that I shed a tear of joy when the ultrasound tech told us I was expecting a girl.  Maybe it was the emotion being 40 and knowing this was our last child.  We had two miscarriages prior my pregnancy with her.   I feel blessed to have both genders in my life, but a little thrilled to have a "Baby Diva."

3. I try to avoid shopping centers because it makes me want to buy things so I just try not to go shopping.  I am in need of a new dress for a wedding in May so got to find one, right?

4. My husband says I am addicted to the Internet. I think he's right!  I can't go by the computer without checking my e-mail, Facebook account, or blog comments.  I may need an intervention.

5. I have not watched soap operas in a very long time, but I felt a lump in my throat when I heard there would be an end to All My Children and One Life to Live.   I have a favorite story that I must share.  It's from my college friend who lives in Finland.  He and I used to write long letters to each other in the 90's before there was e-mail.  We've always kept in touch.  He told me this story one time, and I thought it was so funny.  The Finnish love the soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful.   He used to have some of his students to tell him that their grandmothers would tell them NOT to call when that soap was on the air.  One year, he wrote me the following e-mail and I rolled off my chair.    I made him tell it to me again so I could share it with you.

The Finns have to pay a TV fee, just like the Brits do. And, in Finland there are "TV police" who come around to check whether or not you have a TV. So, there was this funny cartoon that showed a TV police person outside someone's apt door. And, you see a guy poking his outside the door with an angry look on his face. The caption read: "No, I do NOT have a television. And, never come back here again during the Bold & the Beautiful time!"

Ah, I feel that way about a lot of things.  Good thing for peep holes, and caller ID.

6. I have a fear of cooking sweet potatoes.  When my son was six months old, I cooked a sweet potato for lunch in the microwave.  It caught on fire, set off the smoke alarm, and melted the microwave.  Smoke filled the house.  I grabbed my sleeping baby, called 911, and waited for the firemen.   I get a little nervous now when I cook a sweet potato, and I never ever cook one in the microwave.

7. I have a bad habit of extending my child's naps so I can finish something.  I'm doing that now so I must run so that my little one can start her day.  I must say goodbye and a big thank you to the bloggers who awarded me with these blogging awards.

Until next time, I'm off to stay busy during Spring Break!

The Travel Bug

About this time every year, something attacks me other than pollen and seasonal allergies.  I call it the travel bug.   My symptom is an itch to go on a trip.   Truthfully, I get the itch a lot, but it really comes on strong around Spring Break and Easter.

Last year at this time, I was getting ready to pack my suitcase to take my son to the most magical place on earth.   My sister-in-law kept our new daughter so we could give our first born our undivided attention once again in his life.   We were only gone a few days, but it was enough to cure my spring fever and cure my travel bug sickness.

Disney last year

Well, the itch is back!   I have the bug badly.  I’m itching terribly to go somewhere.   I’m not joking when I say I subscribe to about twenty different travel and leisure e-mail subscriptions.  While most moms probably subscribe to e-mails to tell them how to educate their children, my inbox is always alerting me to the latest travel news, the newest resorts, and best luxurious travel deals and offers out there if there is such a thing.   I can't even keep up with them, but when I get a moment, I read every e-mail.

Last week,  my symptoms went into overdrive when I got an e-mail and photo from the Biltmore Estate in Asheville talking about spending Easter weekend in the mountains.

Easter at Biltmore (courtesy of Biltmore Estate)

I'm not kidding when I tell you that this travel bug attacked me with all its might.  Biltmore hosts an egg hunt with a visit from the Easter bunny on the front lawn of the estate. Antler Hill Farm, which is a great place for children to visit on the estate because of the live animals, will host bluegrass music all afternoon, and the winery will have a children’s grape stomp.  Really?  I had thoughts of stomping into the grapes myself and doing my best “I Love Lucy” impersonation.

"I Love Lucy"

It may sound silly, but I had to cut off the computer because the travel itch was taking over my mind and body, and logging off was the only way to relieve my symptoms.   We are now dealing with after storm clean-up so it is fruitless for me to obsess over going to Asheville this year, but it really got me to thinking about future years when the bug strikes again.   I think it would be fun to start a new family tradition where we spend Easter on the road enjoying new experiences and creating family memories.

But for now, we’ll have to make our memories in our home.

And to quote my husband on something he says every time the travel bugs bites me, "Being home doesn’t cost us a thing."

(If you are often bit by the Travel Bug,  I am giving away two free tickets to visit the lovely Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.  This post has the details on how you can enter. The winner will be announced on April 25, 2011)

Counting our Blessings!

Yesterday, I was at my computer like normal writing a future post.  The kids were wrecking havoc in our playroom, and my husband was cleaning the inside of our cars.   I was oblivious to the news and the outside world.   My power starting flickering which doesn't make a blogger very happy, and I went to our garage to tell my husband, "We may lose power so you better get your shower now!"  I, of course, was in yoga pants, and had on no make-up.  I had a lot to do myself. We were to be at a dear friend's birthday party for their son in less than two hours.

I came inside, and within one minute, we lost power.  I saw that it was raining, and a tree branch fell.  My husband came in from the garage, and started yelling, "GET the KIDS and GET IN THE BATHROOM NOW!"

We got everyone together, and sat in our powder room under the staircase for what seemed like an eternity, but it was only six minutes.   We came out, and even though we were shocked by what we saw, we feel incredibly blessed that we are okay, and our home was not damaged.

You can barely see the front of our house due to the loss of this huge tree.

Our backyard sustained a lot of damage as well.  We were heartsick over the loss of our swing set and tree house.

The clean up will now begin.  There is lots to do.

It's going to take us awhile for our yard to look like this again.

But, we are counting our blessings tonight, and glad that we still have a home.

(My column for the News and Observer Triangle Mom2Mom site ironically talked about our backyard today, and how we are going to enjoy it this weekend instead of traveling.  Our Easter is not going to be quite like what planned.)

Until next time, I'm off to do some work.

Surprise! A Stately Give-Away for You

I'm so excited to announce my very first give-away on this blog.   I've talked about the beautiful and majestic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC all week, and now I'm going to give you the opportunity to see the estate for yourself.

Every season is gorgeous at Biltmore. Currently, the Festival of Flowers is underway at the Estate.  In April, 100,000 tulips in the Walled Garden and around the estate, will shine in hues of purple, orange, yellow and white. By May, the show continues with irises, peonies, and acres of azaleas, with summer blooms soon to follow.   This is Biltmore's 26th year highlighting its Festival of Flowers.  The festival runs through May 15th.

On July 1, Biltmore will welcome Tiffany at Biltmore, an exhibition of 45 stained glass lamps created by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and The Tiffany Studios. The exhibition will fill The Biltmore Legacy exhibition hall in Antler Hill Village through Oct. 23. The exhibition, known as “Tiffany Lamps: Articles of Utility, Objects of Art,” comes to Biltmore from The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City. It is an in‐depth look at Tiffany’s efforts to produce lamps that balance artistry with utility and profitability. It features 45 stunning lamps in an array of colors, sizes and decorative styles, and includes tools, materials and period photographs to demonstrate how the lamps were made.

Tiffany-inspired designs and events will spring up across the estate during the exhibition:
  •        The Horticulture team is planning a large-scale Tiffany-inspired design in the Walled Garden. They are in the process of designing  a 40-foot dragonfly pattern for that area. Also, they will create a “living” stained glass wall six feet tall and 30 feet wide populated with plants that mimic Tiffany colors.
  •       The Floral department is creating a “growing” Tiffany-style lamp in the Winter Garden inside Biltmore House
  •          Biltmore resident blacksmith, Doc Cudd, is creating large wrought iron Tiffany-style “lamp stands” with frames on top where baskets of Tiffany-colored flowers will mimic lamp shades. These will be on display in Antler Hill Village, as a prelude, of sorts, to entering the Legacy building, where the exhibition will be housed.
During opening weekend of the Tiffany event – July 1-3 – the estate will have activities for visitors in Antler Hill Village, which is right outside of the Legacy building where the Tiffany exhibition will be held.  Each of those days, there will be face painting, a balloon artist, glass blowing demonstrations, stained glass demonstrations, live music and kids’ crafts.  This will be a great weekend for families!

And of course, Biltmore is absolutely stunning in the fall and during the Christmas holidays.  Christmas at Biltmore will begin November 4, 2011.

Filled with greenery and soft lights, George Vanderbilt's Library takes on a warm glow during the Christmas season in Biltmore House.
Your two Biltmore Estate Passes will be good for one year from the date they are issued so you will have plenty of time to plan your trip to the Biltmore Estate and Asheville, NC.  A winner will be announced on  April 25, 2011
